What are the different types of manual wheelchairs available?
Health Marketplace NZ offers five main types: Standard manual wheelchairs for general use, transit wheelchairs (lightweight, caregiver-pushed) for travel, lightweight and ultra-lightweight wheelchairs for active users, tilt-in-space and reclining wheelchairs for postural support, and bariatric wheelchairs with higher weight capacity and reinforced frames.
How do I properly fold and unfold a manual wheelchair?
To fold: lift up under the center seat upholstery. To unfold: tilt slightly to one side and press down on seat rails, keeping fingers clear of moving parts. Some models may fold differently, so refer to your specific wheelchair user manual for detailed instructions.
How do I determine the correct wheelchair size?
Key measurements needed: sitting height, hip width, leg length, and user weight. Quick fit checks: ensure a hand fits between armrest and thigh, and two fingers fit behind knee to seat edge. Proper fit prevents pressure areas and ensures comfort.
Why are swing-away legrests important?
Swing-away legrests allow the wheelchair to get closer to transfer surfaces, making transfers easier and safer. They enable hoists and transfer equipment to get closer, facilitating better positioning for transfers to beds, chairs, or cars.
Why are anti-tippers important?
Anti-tippers prevent backward tipping when going up inclines or during weight shifts. Health Marketplace NZ strongly recommends never removing them as they are critical safety components that prevent potentially dangerous backward falls.
What is the ideal wheelchair backrest height?
The backrest should end just under the shoulder blade. Adjustable height backrests are recommended, especially when cushions haven't been selected yet, as cushions affect overall seating height and user comfort.
What are the benefits of adjustable armrests?
Adjustable armrests accommodate different user sizes and cushion heights, enable table access, proper tray positioning, and prevent shoulder problems by supporting forearms with elbows at 90 degrees.
Do you offer second-hand or ex-demo wheelchairs?
As an importer, we primarily stock new wheelchairs but occasionally have ex-demo models with minor cosmetic damage at reduced prices with full warranties. For second-hand options, check Trade Me or visit our dealers who may have used wheelchairs available.
What maintenance does my wheelchair need?
Monthly checks: verify tire pressure, clean axles of debris, ensure smooth castor movement, test brake effectiveness, and check all nuts and bolts are secure. Refer to your user manual for specific maintenance requirements.
What advice do you have for choosing the right wheelchair?
