What to Look for in a Health Monitoring Device
Twelve practical buying decisions to think through — from picking between two CGMs to choosing the right hearing aid for your situation.
Upper-arm vs wrist blood pressure monitors
Upper-arm cuff blood pressure monitors are generally regarded as more accurate for at-home readings than wrist models. The cuff sits at heart level, the inflation is automatic, and the reading appears in under a minute. Voice-guided models with dual-user memory are particularly helpful for older household members.
Continuous glucose monitor sensor life
Sensor wear time is the single biggest cost driver of any continuous glucose monitor. Both the LinX 15-Day CGM and the Aidex CGM use 15-day sensors — twice the wear time of older 7-day systems — keeping the per-day cost low over a full month of monitoring.
LinX vs Aidex — which CGM should you choose?
The LinX 15-Day CGM works with both iOS and Android phones and is our hero CGM. The Aidex 15-Day CGM is Android-only and offers a lower entry price. Both deliver 15-day continuous monitoring with factory calibration — choose LinX if you use an iPhone, or Aidex if you're on Android and want the most affordable option.
Smart watch fitness vs health features
A fitness watch focuses on steps, distance, and workout tracking. A smart health watch adds sensors for heart rate, sleep stages, and SpO₂. If you want a single device that handles both daily activity and basic wellbeing tracking, look for a smart watch with a built-in pedometer and heart rate sensor.
Contact-free vs probe thermometers
Contact-free infrared thermometers read body temperature in about a second by sensing heat from the forehead — no skin contact required. They're more hygienic for sharing across a household than under-tongue probes, and dual body+object modes let the same device check baby formula and bath water.
Consumer ECG vs Holter ECG
A consumer Bluetooth ECG records 30-second or 5-minute heart-rhythm sessions on demand — useful for spot checks and routine tracking. A 12-lead AI Holter ECG records continuously for 24 hours or longer and uses hospital-equivalent lead coverage to catch sporadic events that short ECG sessions miss. The consumer ECG is the everyday choice; the Holter is for when your doctor wants longer monitoring data.
Hearing amplifier vs hearing aid
Hearing amplifiers are personal sound amplification products designed for mild to moderate hearing support — no audiologist appointment required. They're a great low-cost entry point. App-controlled Bluetooth hearing aids let you adjust amplification levels and listening profiles directly from your phone for a more tailored experience.
Bluetooth hearing aids — Noise Reduction vs Noise Cancelling
Noise Reduction models lower steady background sounds (traffic, fan noise) while keeping speech clear — useful for everyday environments. Noise Cancelling models actively block more aggressive interference such as crowded restaurants and busy streets. Both pair with a phone app for custom listening profiles.
Fingertip vs wrist-worn pulse oximeter
A traditional fingertip pulse oximeter gives a one-off SpO₂ reading — handy for quick checks. For overnight or trend monitoring, a wrist-worn device like the Wellue Checkme™ O2 Max continuously records SpO₂, pulse rate, and body movement through the night, syncing a full session report you can review in the morning or share with a sleep specialist.
TENS pad life and safety
EasyStick gel pads are designed to be reused over 50 times before they lose their grip, so a pad set typically lasts a long time. Don't use a TENS device if you have a pacemaker, cochlear implant, or epilepsy, if you're pregnant (unless in active labour), or on broken or irritated skin.
Portable insulin refrigerator — home or travel?
A portable insulin refrigerator keeps insulin and other temperature-sensitive medication at the recommended 0–18°C range wherever you go. With 13,600 mAh of battery life (8–10 hours at 4–8°C), it works at home during power cuts, on long-haul flights as approved carry-on, and on tramping or road trips. Worth considering if you're insulin-dependent and travel often.
iOS or Android — which devices work with your phone?
Most of our app-connected devices work with both iOS and Android — including the LinX CGM, Smart Watch Health Monitor, Bluetooth Blood Oxygen Monitor, Wellue Checkme™ O2 Max, and all Bluetooth hearing aids. The Aidex CGM is Android-only. Standalone devices like the Upper Arm BP Monitor, Digital Thermometer, and TENS device need no phone at all.
Frequently Asked
Quick answers about the health monitoring devices in our range.
Do I need a prescription for any of these devices?
None of the at-home health monitoring devices stocked at Health Marketplace NZ require a prescription. Blood pressure monitors, smart watches, thermometers, hearing amplifiers, the LinX CGM, both ECG monitors (Bluetooth and 12-Lead Holter), blood oxygen monitors, TENS devices, and the portable insulin refrigerator are all available over the counter and ship directly to your address. We do recommend consulting your doctor about how to interpret the readings — particularly for the Holter ECG, which is designed to support clinical review.
What's the difference between a CGM and a traditional glucose meter?
A continuous glucose monitor (CGM) uses a small sensor worn on the upper arm to read glucose levels in the fluid under the skin every few minutes, then sends the data to an app on your phone. A traditional glucose meter measures blood glucose at a single moment using a finger-prick blood sample. A CGM gives a continuous picture of glucose trends over time; a meter gives a single snapshot.
How accurate are at-home blood pressure monitors?
Validated upper-arm cuff monitors are widely used by clinicians and are generally considered reliable for at-home tracking when used correctly. Sit with your back supported, feet flat on the floor, arm at heart level, and avoid caffeine, exercise, or smoking for at least 30 minutes before a reading. Take readings at the same time each day for the most consistent comparison.
Will I need a smartphone to use these devices?
It depends on the device. The Upper Arm BP Monitor, Digital Thermometer, Pain Relief Stimulator, Rechargeable Hearing Amplifiers, and Portable Insulin Refrigerator all work standalone — no app required. The Bluetooth ECG Monitor works with or without a phone thanks to its built-in OLED screen, and the 12-Lead AI Holter ECG uses free PC/Mac software via SD card. The CGM, smart watch, blood oxygen monitor, and Bluetooth hearing aid each pair with a companion app for full functionality.
How does a TENS device actually work?
A TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) device sends gentle electrical pulses through adhesive pads placed on the skin — a long-established at-home technique used for everyday muscle relief. Our Pain Relief Stimulator is wireless, rechargeable, and runs four therapy modes with 10 intensity levels. Four wireless units can treat up to four body areas at the same time, and the EasyStick pads are designed to be reused over 50 times. Replacement pads are also available in 4-packs.
Are the LinX CGM sensors waterproof?
Yes — the LinX 15-Day CGM is rated IP68, which means the sensor is dust-tight and protected against immersion. It's safe to wear in the shower, bath, or pool, so you don't need to remove it during normal everyday activities.
