What is a TENS machine, and how does a wireless one work?
TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. A TENS unit passes low-level electrical pulses through gel pads on the skin. Those pulses stimulate nearby nerves, which can help dampen pain signals and encourage the body's own endorphin release — a drug-free way to take the edge off everyday aches. A wireless TENS machine does exactly the same job, but the small rechargeable unit clips directly onto the pad, so there is no control box and no leads.
Our Pain Relief Stimulator uses low-frequency pulses across four therapy modes and ten intensity levels. Each session runs for 15 minutes and switches off automatically, so you can wear it under clothing at your desk, on the couch or in the car without watching the clock.
- Snap a wireless unit onto a pad
Each pod clicks onto an EasyStick gel pad. Use one, two, three or all four.
- Place the pad on clean, dry skin
Lower back, shoulders, knees, calves — avoid the chest, head, eyes and intimate areas.
- Turn on from the charger case
The case is also the controller. Press M to cycle the four modes.
- Dial in the intensity
Start low and use + / – to find a strong but comfortable pulse. It auto-stops after 15 minutes.
Wireless TENS vs a traditional wired TENS unit
Most TENS machines sold in NZ still run leads from a handheld box to the pads. Here is how our wireless design compares — so you can decide which style suits how you'll actually use it.
| Feature | Pain Relief Stimulator (wireless) | Typical wired TENS unit | Heat pad / wheat bag |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leads and wires | None — unit clips onto the pad | Leads from control box to each pad | None (or a power cord) |
| Areas treated at once | Up to 4, each with its own unit | Usually 1–2 (dual channel) | 1 |
| Therapy modes | 4 — Hybrid, Shiatsu, Flapping, Acupuncture | 2–3 on average; some up to 20+ | Heat only |
| Intensity levels | 10, single-button switching | Varies widely by model | 1–3 heat settings |
| Wear under clothing / on the move | Yes — low profile, no dangling leads | Possible, but leads snag and pull pads off | Bulky; mostly seated or lying down |
| Session timer | 15 min auto shut-off, restart as needed | Manual or timed, model dependent | Manual |
| Power | Rechargeable, Type-C charger case | Often AA/AAA batteries | Mains or microwave |
| Pad life | 50+ uses per EasyStick gel pad | Typically 10–20 uses | N/A |
| Replacement pads | Genuine 4-pack stocked in NZ | Brand-specific; sometimes hard to source | N/A |
| Warranty | 1 year | Varies | Varies |
Wired TENS units remain a good fit if you want very high mode counts or a dedicated obstetric TENS with a boost button. Current pricing is shown on each product page.
Four modes, ten intensity levels — which one to reach for
Each mode changes the rhythm of the pulse. Most people try all four in the first week and settle on one or two favourites. Press M on the unit or the charger case to switch.
Hybrid
Combines the recovery and relief pulse patterns in one session. A good first mode to try for the lower back and after exercise.
Shiatsu
A kneading-style pulse that customers describe as feeling like a massage chair. Popular for shoulders and upper back.
Flapping
A lighter tapping rhythm aimed at easing tension. Often used on calves and quads after a long day on your feet or a workout.
Acupuncture
A slower, pinpoint-style pulse. Commonly chosen for the lower abdomen and lower back during period cramps, or for radiating glute discomfort.
Intensity runs from 1 to 10. Start at 1–3 and step up until the pulse feels strong but comfortable — stronger is not better.
Everyday uses for a wireless TENS machine
Because there are no leads, the pads go where the tension is and stay put while you move. These are the areas NZ customers tell us they use it most, with a starting mode for each.
Never place pads over the spine, on the chest, near the eyes, on intimate areas, or on open wounds or irritated skin. If a pulse feels sharp or uncomfortable, turn the intensity down or stop.
Lower back
Desk hours, lifting and gardening all settle into the lower back. One pad either side of the spine, never directly on it.
Try: Hybrid or Shiatsu mode, start on a low intensity
Neck & shoulders
Screen-heavy weeks and long drives tighten the upper trapezius. Pad on each side of the upper back or shoulder blade, avoiding the front of the neck.
Try: Shiatsu mode, start on a low intensity
Period cramps
A single pad on the lower abdomen or lower back is discreet under clothing and can be worn through a workday. One of the most common reasons NZ customers buy a TENS machine.
Try: Acupuncture or Shiatsu mode, start on a low intensity
Knees & hips
Stiffness after long days on your feet. Pads above and below the knee — never on the joint itself — or across the outer hip. Four units means both knees at once.
Try: Shiatsu or Hybrid mode, start on a low intensity
Glute & leg discomfort
Radiating tension from the lower back into the glute or hamstring. One pad on the lower back, one on the upper glute.
Try: Acupuncture mode, start on a low intensity
Post-workout recovery
Calves, quads and shoulders after training. Uses the low-frequency muscle-stimulation modes to ease next-day tightness.
Try: Flapping or Hybrid mode, start on a low intensity
A TENS machine is for temporary relief of everyday aches and is not a substitute for advice from a doctor or physiotherapist. If pain is severe, sudden, worsening, or follows an injury, please see a health professional first. This standard wireless unit is not designed for use during labour — NZ guidance recommends a purpose-built obstetric TENS for that.
A portable TENS machine that charges in its own case
Drop the four units back into the case and they charge automatically. The case is also the controller, so there is nothing else to carry — it fits in a handbag, glovebox or desk drawer.
Units power down on their own after 60 seconds off the skin, and every session ends after 15 minutes, so a forgotten pad won't flatten the battery. Charging is via a Type-C port on the case.

Replacement electrode pads — and how to make them last
Gel pads are the one consumable on any TENS unit. Ours are rated for 50+ uses each, and when they stop sticking cleanly we stock the genuine EasyStick-specification 4-pack right here in NZ — no guessing at compatibility with generic TENS electrode pads.
No moisturiser, oil or sunscreen under the pad — it shortens stick-life fastest.
Press the pad back onto its plastic film and store flat, out of direct sun.
Heat and cold both shorten gel life. Keep the pads in the carry case between uses.
Uneven pulse, edges lifting, or a pad that won't hold on the move — time for a fresh set.
How to choose the best TENS machine for you in NZ
“Best” depends on where and how you'll use it. Six quick questions narrow it down.
Where will you wear it?
If the answer is "at work", "in the car" or "under clothes", wireless wins — leads snag and pull pads loose. If it's only ever on the couch, a wired unit is fine too.
How many areas at once?
Lower back and both knees in one sitting needs three or four channels. Most wired units are dual-channel; our wireless set has four independent units.
Modes vs simplicity
Twenty modes look impressive on a box but most people use two. Four clearly different modes and ten intensity steps on a single button is easier to live with.
Running costs
Check pad life and whether replacements are stocked locally. 50+ uses per pad and a genuine 4-pack shipped from NZ keeps the ongoing cost low.
Power and warranty
Rechargeable beats AA batteries for daily use. Look for a 12-month warranty and an NZ-based team you can email if something goes wrong.
Any reason not to use TENS?
This device isn't suitable with a pacemaker or cochlear implant, with epilepsy, or during pregnancy. If unsure, ask your GP or physio before buying.
TENS machine FAQs for NZ shoppers
The questions we're asked most before people buy their first TENS unit.
Does a TENS machine hurt?
No. At the right intensity it feels like a strong tingling, tapping or kneading sensation — many customers compare it to a massage chair. Start at level 1–3 and step up gradually. If it ever feels sharp or uncomfortable, turn it down or move the pad slightly.
How long should I use a TENS machine for?
Our wireless unit runs 15-minute sessions and switches off automatically. It can be restarted as needed. Give the skin a break between sessions, and stop if the area becomes red or irritated.
Can I wear a wireless TENS machine under clothing at work?
Yes — that's the main reason people choose wireless. Each unit is a low-profile pod that clips onto the pad, with no control box or leads, so it sits flat under a shirt or waistband. It is quiet, and you control it from the charger case or the button on the unit itself.
Can I use a TENS machine for period cramps?
TENS is widely used as a drug-free option during period cramps. Place a single pad on the lower abdomen or lower back, choose the Acupuncture or Shiatsu mode and set a comfortable intensity. The wireless design means it can be worn discreetly through the day. Do not use TENS during pregnancy, and check with your GP first if you have any health concerns.
Who should not use a TENS machine?
Do not use this device with a pacemaker or cochlear implant, with epilepsy, during pregnancy (unless in active labour under guidance), or on open wounds or irritated skin. Do not place pads near the eyes, on the chest, or on intimate areas. Avoid use near water or while operating machinery. If in doubt, ask your GP or physiotherapist first.
What's the difference between TENS and EMS?
TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) targets sensory nerves to help dampen pain signals. EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation) targets the muscle itself, causing it to contract and relax — used for recovery and muscle conditioning. Our Pain Relief Stimulator is sold as a wireless electrical muscle stimulator and TENS device: a low-frequency pulse unit used for everyday aches, with kneading- and tapping-style modes for muscle recovery.
How long do the gel pads last, and where do I buy replacement TENS pads in NZ?
Each EasyStick gel pad is rated for 50+ uses with normal care — clean dry skin, re-covered with its film after each session, stored flat. When a pad stops sticking cleanly or the pulse feels uneven, swap to the genuine Premium Replacement Electrode Pads (4-pack), stocked and shipped from New Zealand.
Is a wireless TENS machine as effective as a wired one?
The pulse technology is the same — the difference is the delivery. A wired unit pushes current from a central box down leads; a wireless unit generates it in the pod on the pad. Wireless trades very high mode counts for freedom of movement and up to four independently placed units. For everyday use at home, work and on the go, most customers find wireless far easier to keep using consistently.
How long does delivery take, and is shipping free in NZ?
Orders are dispatched from within New Zealand, usually within 1–3 business days, then 2–5 business days to suburban addresses and 5–7 to rural. NZ orders over $79 ship free. You'll receive a tracking link by email once your order is on its way. See our shipping policy for full details.
What warranty and returns apply?
The Pain Relief Stimulator comes with a 1-year warranty. Under our refund policy, refund requests must be made within 14 days of purchase, and change-of-mind items must be unused, unopened and in original packaging (we offer refunds, not exchanges). Faulty, damaged or incorrect items are refunded in full. Our NZ-based team is available by email through the contact page.
