Clinic vs online

Clinic-fitted vs online hearing aids in NZ

Clinic-fitted hearing aids are custom-programmed by an audiologist and suit all levels of hearing loss, but are typically quoted in the thousands of dollars a pair. Online rechargeable hearing aids like ours are ready-to-wear devices for mild to moderate hearing loss, at a fraction of typical clinic prices — here's how the two pathways compare.

Set-up Programmed in-clinic by an audiologist Ready to wear out of the box, with app fine-tuning on Bluetooth models
Typical cost Often quoted in the thousands of dollars per pair A fraction of typical clinic prices — current pricing on each product page
Batteries Disposable or rechargeable, depending on model Rechargeable on every model — no ongoing battery purchases
Bluetooth & app control Available on premium models Included on three of our four models
Suited to All levels, including severe and profound hearing loss Mild to moderate hearing loss
Ongoing care In-clinic adjustments and servicing NZ-based support and a straightforward returns process

Both pathways have their place. If a hearing professional has recommended clinic-fitted devices, or hearing has changed suddenly or significantly, we'd encourage that route — our range is designed for everyday mild to moderate support.

Styles & fit

Types of hearing aids explained

Hearing aids come in three main styles — behind-the-ear, in-ear and invisible in-canal — and the right type usually comes down to comfort, ease of handling and how discreet you'd like the device to be.

Behind-the-ear (BTE)

The body of the device sits behind the ear, with a slim tube carrying sound into the ear canal. Easy to handle and adjust — a common style for clinic-fitted devices.

In-ear & semi-in-ear

Sits within the outer ear or the opening of the ear canal. Discreet, lightweight and quick to insert — this is the style used across our whole range.

Invisible & in-canal

Sits deep in the ear canal, nearly out of sight. Usually custom-moulded through a clinic so the shell matches the shape of the ear precisely.

All four Health Marketplace models use discreet in-ear or semi-in-ear designs — small enough to wear all day without drawing attention, and simple enough to insert and remove without help.

Rechargeable

Rechargeable hearing aids — no more battery runs

Every hearing aid we stock is rechargeable, so there are no size 13 or 312 button batteries to buy, store or fumble with. Place the devices in their charging case, and a short charge delivers up to a full day of listening.

Bluetooth & app

Bluetooth hearing aids with app control

Three of our four models pair with a free companion app over Bluetooth, so volume, listening modes and sound settings can be adjusted straight from a phone — no return trips anywhere for small tweaks.

  • Switch listening modes for conversation, TV, phone calls or noisy environments
  • Fine-tune volume and frequency settings for each ear independently
  • Run the in-app hearing check on our Noise Reduction model to personalise sound at home
  • Prefer buttons? The 38dB model adds an on-device rocker switch with beep alerts, so the app is optional

Buying guide

How to choose hearing aids online

Choosing hearing aids online comes down to three questions: the level of support needed, the style of fit you'll be comfortable wearing all day, and whether app control matters to you.

Check the level of support

Our range is designed for mild to moderate hearing loss — the level where group conversations take effort or the TV keeps creeping louder. For severe or profound hearing loss, or any sudden change in hearing, see a hearing professional first.

Pick your style and features

Start simple with the semi-in-ear rechargeable amplifiers, or step up to a discreet in-ear Bluetooth model with noise cancelling and app fine-tuning. Every option is rechargeable.

Order online, adjust at home

Delivered NZ-wide with free shipping over $79. Charge the case, follow the quick-start guide, and give your ears a week or two of regular wear to adjust to amplified sound.

Hearing aid funding in New Zealand

New Zealand offers Government hearing-aid subsidy and funding schemes, and ACC may contribute where hearing loss relates to an injury or workplace noise. These are accessed through audiology clinic pathways and include a hearing assessment. Health Marketplace devices sit outside those schemes — they're direct-purchase online with no referral or appointment needed, which is exactly what keeps them accessible. Questions before you order? Common questions

Hearing aid FAQs

What level of hearing loss requires a hearing aid?

There is no single threshold — hearing support is usually considered when everyday situations become hard work, such as following conversation in a group, needing the TV louder than others find comfortable, or often asking people to repeat themselves. Our range is designed for mild to moderate hearing loss. If hearing loss is severe or profound, or hearing has changed suddenly, a hearing professional is the right first step.

What is the difference between a hearing aid and a hearing amplifier?

Both amplify sound. Hearing amplifiers boost overall volume with digital noise reduction and are a simple, affordable entry point. Our Bluetooth hearing aids add 16-channel sound processing, multiple listening modes and app control, so sound can be shaped more precisely for different environments.

How long do rechargeable hearing aids last on a charge?

Our rechargeable hearing amplifiers deliver up to 20 hours of use from a 2-hour Type-C charge, and their charging case stores another 3–4 full charges. Our Bluetooth 38dB model reaches a full-day charge in under 2 hours. Battery life for each model is listed on its product page.

Do I need a hearing test or referral to buy hearing aids online in NZ?

No. Our devices are direct-purchase, over-the-counter hearing aids and amplifiers — order online and they arrive ready to wear, with no appointment or referral needed. One Bluetooth model includes an in-app hearing check to personalise sound at home. A professional hearing test is still a good idea if you are unsure about the degree of hearing loss.

How much do hearing aids cost in NZ?

Clinic-fitted hearing aids in New Zealand are typically quoted in the thousands of dollars a pair once assessments and fittings are included. Ready-to-wear online hearing aids like ours cost a fraction of that — current pricing is shown on each product page, and orders over $79 ship free within New Zealand.

Will these hearing aids work for severe or profound hearing loss?

They are not designed to. Every model in our range targets mild to moderate hearing loss. For severe or profound hearing loss, clinic-fitted devices programmed by an audiologist remain the right option.

Can I connect these hearing aids to my phone?

Three of our four models pair over Bluetooth with a free companion app for volume, listening-mode and sound adjustments. The entry-level rechargeable amplifiers are app-free by design, with simple controls on the device itself.

What comes in the box with your hearing aids?

It varies by model. Our Bluetooth Noise Cancelling 38dB set includes the hearing aids, charging case, charging cable, cleaning tools, a cerumen (ear wax) kit and spare earplugs. Each product page lists the full box contents for that model.
