Know the difference

Types of blood pressure monitors & thermometers explained

A quick guide to the main device types you'll see when shopping in NZ — and which style each of our products uses.

Upper arm blood pressure monitor

A cuff wraps around the upper arm and inflates automatically at the press of a button. Because the cuff sits at heart level, upper arm monitors are the style most home-monitoring guidance (including the NZ Heart Foundation's buying tips) recommends. All of our blood pressure monitors are upper arm models.

Bluetooth / smart blood pressure monitor

Works the same way as a standard upper arm monitor, but sends each reading to a companion app over Bluetooth. Handy if you want a tidy history to look back on — or to share with your doctor or nurse — without writing anything down.

BP monitor with ECG & heart rate

Combines an upper arm blood pressure cuff with built-in ECG and heart rate monitoring, all saved in one app. One device covers the readings that would otherwise need two.

An ECG trace is information for you and your health professional — it is not a diagnosis.

Digital stick thermometer

The familiar pen-style thermometer with a digital readout and beep when the reading is done. Suitable for oral, underarm, or rectal use, so one thermometer covers everyone from babies to adults. Ours has a fast read time and a flexible tip for comfort.

Wrist monitors, ear & forehead thermometers

You'll also see wrist blood pressure monitors and infrared ear or forehead thermometers in NZ stores. Wrist monitors are compact but more position-sensitive than upper arm cuffs; infrared thermometers are fast but typically cost more. We focus our range on upper arm monitors and digital stick thermometers — the dependable, well-priced core of home monitoring.

Every reading saved — no notebook required

Our Bluetooth blood pressure monitors sync each reading to a free companion app, building a clear history you can scroll through or show your doctor or nurse at your next appointment.

  • Automatic reading history with date and time — nothing to write down
  • Easy-to-read trends, so changes over weeks are simple to spot
  • USB rechargeable option — no hunting for replacement batteries
  • ECG & heart rate model records extra detail in the same app
  • Multiple family members can keep separate profiles

For the whole family

A digital thermometer for every NZ household

Winter colds, teething babies, back-to-school bugs — a reliable thermometer is the first thing you reach for. Our digital thermometer gives a fast, clear reading with a beep when it's done, and its flexible tip makes it comfortable for oral, underarm, or rectal use.

One thermometer covers everyone: it's suitable for babies, children, and adults. Keep it in the medicine cabinet, or add a second to the baby bag.

If a family member's temperature or symptoms concern you, contact your GP or Healthline — a home thermometer is a helpful guide, not a substitute for medical advice.

Buying guide

How to choose a blood pressure monitor in NZ

Four quick decisions get you to the right device — the same considerations the NZ Heart Foundation suggests weighing up when buying a home monitor.

Choose an upper arm cuff

Upper arm monitors read at heart level, which is why home-monitoring guidance prefers them over wrist models. Every monitor in our range is an upper arm design, so this step is already done.

Check the cuff fits your arm

A cuff that's too tight or too loose can affect the reading. It should sit snugly around the bare upper arm with room to slide two fingertips underneath. Cuff dimensions are listed on each product page.

Decide how you'll track readings

Happy writing readings in a logbook? A standard monitor is all you need. Prefer them saved automatically with date, time, and trends? Choose a Bluetooth model — or the ECG version if you'd like heart rate detail in the same app.

Think about the whole household

If you also want to check temperatures — kids' fevers, winter bugs — add the digital thermometer to the same order and cover the whole household in one delivery.

Getting reliable readings

Simple habits for accurate blood pressure readings at home

Home readings are often more relaxed — and can be more representative — than one-off checks elsewhere. These habits, based on NZ Heart Foundation guidance, help every reading count.

Rest for five minutes first

Sit upright with your back supported, legs uncrossed, feet flat on the floor.

Same arm, bare skin

Place the cuff two fingers above the elbow, at heart level, with your palm up on a table.

Avoid coffee & exercise beforehand

Skip caffeine, smoking, exercise, and hot showers for 30 minutes before a reading.

Take two readings, same time daily

Wait one minute between readings and record both — or let a Bluetooth model save them for you.

A home monitor supports the care you get from your doctor or nurse — it doesn't replace it. If a reading is very high (180/120 or above after a repeat), or something feels wrong, contact your GP or Healthline promptly.

Common questions

Blood pressure monitor & thermometer FAQs

Which blood pressure monitor is best for home use in NZ?

For most people, an automatic upper arm blood pressure monitor is the best home choice — the cuff sits at heart level, which home-monitoring guidance recommends for accuracy. If you'd like readings saved automatically, choose a Bluetooth model; if you also want heart rate and ECG detail, the Bluetooth BP + ECG monitor covers all three in one device.

Are upper arm monitors more accurate than wrist monitors?

Upper arm monitors are generally considered more reliable for home use because the cuff naturally sits at the same height as your heart. Wrist monitors are very position-sensitive — small changes in arm height can shift the result. That's why our range is upper arm only.

How do I get an accurate blood pressure reading at home?

Rest seated for five minutes first, with your back supported and feet flat on the floor. Fit the cuff on your bare upper arm, two fingers above the elbow, at heart level. Avoid caffeine, smoking, exercise, and hot showers for 30 minutes beforehand. Take two readings a minute apart and record both, ideally at the same times each day.

What do blood pressure numbers like 120/80 mean?

The top number (systolic) is the pressure in your blood vessels when your heart beats; the bottom number (diastolic) is the pressure when your heart relaxes between beats. What's ideal varies by person, so it's best to ask your doctor or nurse for your own target. If a reading is 180/120 or higher and stays there on a repeat five minutes later, contact your GP or Healthline promptly.

Can I use the digital thermometer for my baby?

Yes — the digital thermometer is suitable for babies, children, and adults, with a flexible tip for comfort. For babies, an underarm or rectal reading is usually easiest (follow the included instructions for each method). If your baby seems unwell or a temperature worries you, contact your GP, Plunket, or Healthline.

Do the Bluetooth monitors work with my phone?

The Bluetooth models pair with a free companion app on both Android and iOS smartphones. Each reading is saved automatically with date and time, so you can review trends or show your reading history at your next appointment. Setup details are on each product page.

Do you ship blood pressure monitors and thermometers across New Zealand?

Yes — we ship nationwide within New Zealand, with free NZ shipping on orders over $79. Orders are supported by our NZ-based team, and our returns process is covered by the refund policy linked in the footer. Current pricing is on each product page.
